Supermarkets are slashing the price of vegetables to as low as 8p this Christmas as part of their ‘Christmas Veg Wars’.

As well as half-price meat offers, you can get your veg staples for a fraction of the price in the run-up to Christmas!

Farmers do not lose out on any profits during this yearly deal. Supermarkets use these vegetables as a ‘loss leader’ – meaning they don’t make a profit, in an effort to get you to spend money on other products!

Why do supermarkets sell veg so cheap at Christmas?

Supermarkets slash the price of vegetables at Christmas purely for strategic reasons.

One being competitive pressure – all Supermarkets do it, so they wouldn’t sell any veg if they didn’t get in on the action.

Cheap “Christmas dinner veg” (carrots, potatoes, sprouts, parsnips) are also classic loss leaders. Supermarkets sell them below cost to get shoppers through the door, knowing people will buy plenty of higher-margin items while they shop.
